The match opened up with Orton and Reigns talking trash to each other. It ended when Reigns punched Orton in the face. The match went back and forth with Roman and Orton having their time to control the match. Orton gained control when they went to the outside and he sent Roman crashing into the steel steps. Randy Orton gave Roman a picture perfect superplex from the top rope. Afterwards, he locked in multiple headlocks in an effort to squeeze out any life in Reigns. However, Roman would always get out of them quickly after they were applied.
Reigns eventually gained the upper hand and hit Orton with the outside jumping dropkick. However when Roman looked like he was going to keep the upper hand in the match, Orton would reverse a throw into the barricade and throw Roman onto the announcer's table. Their back and forth would continue to the top rope when Roman was going to hit a superplex of his own on Orton. He countered that with a headbutt. Reigns then gave Randy a good solid right hand punch dazing the veteran. Roman then got Orton up for a samoan drop from the second rope.
Roman hit Orton with a superman punch. Immediately after, Roman went into the corner of the ring waiting for Randy to get back up so he can hit him with a spear. This looked silly because Orton was down on the mat for about a minute and a half. So Reigns was just standing in the corner of the ring doing nothing. When Roman went to finally hit the spear on Orton, he countered it into a power slam. Randy went for a RKO but Roman countered it and went for a superman punch. In mid air, Randy Orton hit an RKO from out of nowhere!
Orton went for the pin but Reigns kicked out. Randy Orton was completely shocked that the rookie kicked out of his best move. However Orton had one move he hasn't tried yet. Orton backed up into the the corner and was readying for his punt kick. Roman is getting up and Randy goes for the punt. Like something out of Charlie Brown, Roman pulled Orton's leg right from under him and hit him with the spear. This put Randy down for the 3 count. The rookie did it, Roman Reigns has defeated "The Face of the WWE".
Now personally, I found this match very average. There was no big spot that made this match memorable. It was just Randy Orton and Roman Reigns going through the motions and performing all of their signature moves. This match wasn't suppose to be a classic. It was just to test Roman Reigns to see if he could handle being with the Main Event talent. While he did good in this match, he still seems a little rough around the edges. Like when I pointed out the time Roman was just standing in the corner waiting to hit his spear on Orton. He knows how to do his big moves but doesn't seem to know how to string them together naturally. Now is Roman ready to be in the Main Event scene? While he is far from winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, I think he has what it takes to be in Main Event caliber matches. He most certainly has the "look" and the crowd loves him. At the end of the day, that's the most important thing. The crowd has to be into you before you can make it to the top.
Ever since Money in the Bank 2014, The Authority did not want John Cena to be the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. It's a little confusing at first why The Authority doesn't want Cena as their champion. I mean John Cena is the picture perfect role model that would be proud to represent the WWE. He does a bunch of charity work with the Make A Wish Foundation. He also sells the most merchandise out of everyone currently in the WWE. He's the ultimate good guy. Playing by the rules and living by the mantra of Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect. The only thing John Cena is not is a kiss ass to The Authority. They want someone who will follow their every command. They want someone who will be in their pocket like Randy Orton, Kane, and Seth Rollins. John Cena simply will not listen to The Authority. They are the bad guys, and he is the good guy.

John Cena granting his 300th Wish with Make a Wish
- Good Morning America June 2012 |
The Authority tried to have the odds stacked against Cena at Battleground 2014 by having him defend his championship against Randy Orton, Kane, and Roman Reigns. Cena overcame those odds and won the match. So now Triple H will name the next #1 Contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
On the July 21st episode of RAW, Triple H named the #1 Contender. Out came Randy Orton, the "Face of the WWE". It looks like it will be yet another John Cena vs. Randy Orton match at Summerslam. Suddenly Roman Reigns came out of nowhere and attacked Orton. They went into the crowd and were never seen again that night. Triple H had a very frustrated look on his face. Earlier in the night his wife was sent to prison, and now his #1 Contender has been chased away. Things just are not going the way The Authority wants them to go.
Then, out came Paul Heyman. Heyman noted that Plan A isn't working with Randy Orton as long as Roman Reigns is around. Plan B is also not going to work out with Seth Rollins as long as Dean Ambrose is around. But, what about a Plan C? Out came the conqueror, Brock Lesnar.
Brock Lesnar and Triple H are not exactly on good terms as last time they met, he broke Triple H's arm. However, Triple H has to swallow his pride and side with Heyman and Brock. He most absolutely wants John Cena to lose the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Sometimes you must work alongside your enemies if they can help you with your problem.
Brock Lesnar is a former NCAA Division 1 Champion, former UFC Heavyweight Champion, former IWGP Heavyweight Champion, a 3 time OVW Southern Tag Team Champion, the 2002 King of the Ring, winner of the 2003 Royal Rumble, a 2 time WWE Champion, former Undisputed WWE Champion, and is the person who ended The Undertaker's 21 win streak at Wrestlemania. His list of accomplishments is one of the most impressive one person can have. He is the 1 in 21-1, the only man who defeated The Undertaker at Wrestlemania.
John Cena and Brock Lesnar have only had two big matches against each other. The first at WWE Backlash 2003, and at Extreme Rules 2012 in an Extreme Rules match. Their last encounter at Extreme Rules 2012 was a brutal one. Basically Brock beat Cena to a bloody pulp. Cena was only able to win due to a shot to Brock's head with his chains. In the buildup to this match it was mention that the only reason Brock lost that match was because he was not 100% due to his real life struggle with Diverticulitis. However he is now 100% and he just defeated The Undertaker's Streak. The stage is set for the biggest fight of the summer between Brock Lesnar and John Cena for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
When the match started, Cena and Lesnar locked up and started pounding on each other. Brock lifted up Cena onto his shoulder and hit him with a F-5 in the first 30 seconds of the match. This set the tone for the rest of the match. Cena is laying down on the mat, barely moving. The crowd is definitely in support of Lesnar as when a small smattering of "Lets Go Cena!" started, a thunderous "Cena Sucks!" rocked the arena.

Brock Lesnar giving John Cena a F-5
in the early part of their match - WWE Summerslam 2014 |
Cena is using Brock to help himself up but he gives Cena a german suplex. Lesnar then gave Cena another german suplex. Lesnar hit Cena in the ribs with his knee while his manager, Paul Heyman, is gleefully smiling outside the ring. Cena tried to throw a punch but he missed Lesnar and fell back onto the mat. Lesnar picks up Cena and gives him a regular suplex. Cena finally gets up and pushes Brock into the corner, throwing punches at him. Lesnar however ends Cena's offense with two swift shots to the ribs with his knee.
Lesnar put Cena into a headlock but, he starts to fight out of it. Once again Lesnar quickly ends Cena's offense and threw him down onto the mat while giving him another knee shot to the ribs. Cena is gasping for air and the ref asks him if he can continue. Cena gets another offense in with some more punches but yet again Lesnar ends it with a shot to the ribs. He adds insult to injury by standing on Cena's hand and gives it a good stomp.
He gives Cena four more german suplexes in quick succession. Both Michael Cole and JBL on commentary are begging for the ref to end this match. Jerry Lawler is telling them not to count out John Cena. He always overcomes the odds....right? Lesnar pins Cena but he kicks out at two. Brock gives a shot to his ribs as a thank you for kicking out. Lesnar gives Cena yet ANOTHER german suplex. Cena is just laying on the mat, with a far away look in his eyes. Cena is out of it. Brock tells the referee to ask John if he wants to end the match. Cena gives no response as he tries to get back up. Lesnar gives Cena ANOTHER german suplex.

Brock Lesnar giving John Cena a german suplex -
WWE Summerslam 2014 |
While Cena is getting back up, Lesnar is going to give him yet another suplex. Cena throws elbows into Brock's head. Is Cena making a comeback? Cena runs into the ropes hitting Lesnar in the head with his elbows. Lesnar picks Cena up for a second F-5 but Cena counters it and gives him an AA. This is it, Cena is overcoming the odds. John goes to cover Lesnar but only gets a 2 count. Both Cena and Lesnar are laying flat on their backs on the mat. Cena manages to crawl over to the corner and uses the bottom turnbuckle as a headrest. Brock then sits up from a laying down position just like The Undertaker. Lesnar gets up and starts laughing at Cena. Just what is Cena fighting in the ring, a beast?

Brock Lesnar sitting up just like The Undertaker and
laughing at John Cena - WWE Summerslam 2014 |
Cena is sitting in the corner and explodes out of it and tackles Brock. Lesnar then gives Cena a beatdown and does THREE MORE german suplexes to Cena. Lesnar yells at Cena, "DIE! DIE!". He tells the ref to ask him. Cena is giving no answer. Lesnar gives Cena THREE MORE GERMAN SUPLEXES YET AGAIN! The ref goes and ask Cena if he wants to end the match. The ref looks like he is about to end the match, but then asks Cena one more time if he wants to end the match. Someone in the crowd is chanting "Boring! Boring!" Cena finally tells the ref no, he is not quitting. Brock is busy yelling at the ref to end the match, so Cena uses this as a distraction and gets Lesnar into a STF. Will Cena finally be able to win this beat down? Will he overcome the odds like other times before? Lesnar gets out of the STF, pounds Cena some more, and gives him a second F-5. Lesnar pins Cena for the 3 count finally. It is over, Cena lost.
Never has a world champion in WWE got COMPLETELY DOMINATED like John Cena did against Brock Lesnar. In professional wrestling, there are matches called "Squash Matches". They are matches where it is completely one sided with the losing wrestler getting in little to no offense. Never has a world champion got squashed in a main event like this.
I noted seemly randomly that some fans in the crowd where chanting "Boring! Boring!" They were right. As a technical wrestling match, this match was boring. The wrestling moves used in the match were german suplexes, a regular suplex, a headlock, a STF, and a Attitude Adjustment (Fireman's Carry). But there is more to professional wrestling than just wrestling maneuvers. There's also the storytelling aspect to matches. Everyone involved in this match did their part fantastically. From John Cena's facial expressions and body language, To the commentators counting out Cena and saying for the ref to stop this match. Jerry Lawler did a great job supporting and defending John Cena all the way until the 3 count. Just like all of John Cena's fans did. Even the referee did great, looking completely torn whether to end the match without Cena's consent or not. Everyone did what they needed to do and excelled at it.
The story the match was telling was of a hero who just couldn't overcome evil. John Cena has been WWE's resident Superman for a long time now. He is the cookie cutter good guy. Brock Lesnar is not that guy. He defeated The Undertaker's Streak at Wrestlemania XXX. A streak the fans grew to love and cherish. There has always been one constant in the WWE, and that is The Undertaker's streak. The Streak has been the focal point of Undertaker's matches at Wrestlemania for the past 10 years. Brock Lesnar took that away from us and The Undertaker. It's like when you're a little kid hearing about Santa Claus. He's a mythical being that you liked. The Undertaker has this aura around him of being immortal. However when we grew older, we found out that Santa Claus was not real. Just like how Brock Lesnar showed us at Wrestlemania XXX that The Undertaker is just a guy, not a mythical being. Brock Lesnar is someone who fights for money only. He doesn't care about the WWE. He left it one time already, he could just do it again. On the contrary, John Cena lives and breaths the WWE.
Why is it that the fans were supporting the person who doesn't care about them rather than the person who loves them, and the product they love. It's because John Cena has become dull for the last two years. He does the same thing, over and over again. You can only see the same person overcoming the odds so many times before it becomes completely boring. I said in the very beginning of this retrospective that the WWE is trying to put John Cena out of the limelight. This match just further solidifies that idea. Brock Lesnar broke The Undertaker's streak and completely decimated a 15 time world champion. The person who finally does beat Lesnar will be made an instant star. The only question is, who will it be? Who can stop The Beast?
