For August 2014 (With one from July 2014)
Hello again! It's been 3 months since I last posted anything on this blog, especially video game finds. The main reason why is a mix between no job = no money and pure and utter laziness. Also maybe lack of interest, I don't know. But whatever the reason, I got the itch to write today and hopefully some more soon.
As I said before, I am currently unemployed so buying things is well pretty hard but I saved up some cash and I've got quite a lot of stuff these past two weeks so I figured to share them here right with you :) Now before I go into the finds for August, I've found only one thing in July so without further a do....
Addition #1 - Walmart
|
PS2 Memory Cards - 2 Pack Red and Blue |
The Walmart close to be has a huge clearance section. Now you would think there would be a lot of video game stuff in there right? Well not really, mostly it's just Band Hero sets for the PS2 selling for $75 in crappy condition. Then this caught my eye, brand new Playstation 2 memory cards in both Red and Blue. As you see in the picture, it had a big $29 price sticker on it which if you ask me, is not really a good clearance deal. But some walmart employee also put a $14.50 sticker on it as well. A nice find for a good price.
PS2 Memory Cards - 2 Pack Red and Blue - Cost $15 - Worth $13-$20
- Difference Either -$2 or +$5 Depends on where you buy it
Additions #2 - Game X Change
|
Pac-Pix for DS, Donkey Konga for Gamecube, WWE Crush Hour for PS2, and WWF Attitude, WWF War Zone, and WCW/nWo Thunder for PS1 |
I went to the Waterbury, CT Game X Change which is about 40 minutes away, so I don't go to that one often. I had a lot of cash saved up and I wanted to spend some of it. The reason I got Donkey Konga is because a friend of mine gave me his DK Bongo's that came with his Donkey Konga game.
The only problem is that I never had a game that worked with the bongos. So they were just sitting around my house, collecting dust for well over a year. I really want Donkey Kong Jungle Beat but I just am never able to find it across my path. Maybe one day. So I pretty much got Konga because I didn't want those bongos to be useless anymore. It's a pretty fun game, though it's pretty barebones as really all you do is play songs over and over again. I mean Mario DDR at least had a story mode.
Pac-Pix was a title released around the first 6 months of the original DS. I remember playing this game at a demo station at Best Buy and it was pretty meh. I didn't have a chance to play this yet but for $3, I just couldn't have said no to a CIB DS game. I hate loose DS games, like it comes with a plastic case, what do you people do to it? Eat it?
Now I'm not a video game collector that collect every single game for a system. I don't really understand those people, why would you go out of your way to but Dora the Explorer games and other shovelware. Quality over quantity. But when I find a series I like, I try to find every single game in that series (or at least one version of a game). I'm currently doing that for both Sonic the Hedgehog and WWF/WWE (and also WCW and ECW) games. I got every single WWE game on the Xbox 360 and almost got that for the Gamecube, PS2, PS1, and DS. With these 4 wrestling games I'm a little close to reaching that goal.
Fun little story, when I was walking the store, I was over hearing a conversation between the employee's. One was holding up the
Scooby-Doo and WWE movie and he says to the other guy, "Look who's on the cover next to Scooby-Doo" Now on the cover next to Scooby is of course John Cena. The other guy then says, "They still make those?" In reference to the WWE of course. Kinda ironic that I walk up with 4 WWF/E games.
Now WWF Attitude, WWF War Zone, and WCW/nWo Thunder for the PS1 are not what I would call, "fun". Now this is not my final opinion on those games as I played all three for about 4 minutes but they were not a fun 4 minutes. I'll go back to those games later and try to learn how to play them properly and then give my final thoughts on them. WWE Crush Hour is a weird concept for a WWE game. Instead of wrestling, it's a vehicular combat game, similar to Twisted Metal. I only played this one for 5 minutes but I think it was fun. It's not a fantastic game on it's own but since I like the WWE, I could find enjoyment out of it.
Pac-Pix for Nintendo DS - Cost $3 - Worth $6 - Difference +$3
Donkey Konga for Nintendo Gamecube - Cost $6 - Worth $7 - Difference +$1
WWF War Zone for Playstation 1 - Cost $5 - Worth $4 - Difference -$1
WWF Attitude for Playstation 1 - Cost $5 - Worth $5 - Difference $0
WCW/nWo Thunder for Playstation 1 - Cost $3 - Worth $5 - Difference +$2
WWE Crush Hour for Playstation 2 - Cost $6 - Worth $6 - Difference $0
Addition #3 - Fye Games
|
Sonic Spinball for SEGA Genesis |
Since I was in Waterbury, I figured to go to the Brass Hill Mall as well. In this mall there is a Gamestop and a Fye Games inside. What I find funny is Gamestop, the bigger video game chain has a way smaller store than Fye Games. And Fye Games also sell retro games as well as modern games. They only downside is that they keep most retro games in plastic cases so I can't look inside them to see if they come with instructions or other inserts. The only thing of interest I found was Sonic Spinball for the SEGA Genesis. Too bad it didn't come with the manual but at least it got a case.
Sonic Spinball for SEGA Genesis - Cost $5 - Worth $6 - Difference +$1
Addition #4 - Toys R Us
|
Guitar Hero II for PS2 |
Toys R Us has been having clearance for a week and my Toys R Us has been picked clean well before the clearance got to 90% off. I decided to stop one more time before it ends so see if they put out any more games. The only games they had was a Jones Brothers DS game, a High School Musical singing game, and Guitar Hero II for the PS2. Now I didn't want this because well I don't have a PS2 guitar so that seems kinda pointless. But at 95% off clearance, I figured what the hell, why not! So I asked the cashier how much it was. $0.04, a game for less than a dime, sure thing! And when he rang it up, the total came to $0.00. So I got Guitar Hero II brand new for FREE! That was the best find I might ever find!
Guitar Hero II for Playstation 2 - Cost $0 - Worth $5 - Difference +$5
Addition #5 - Best Buy
|
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Pre-Order Slip |
Over the past year, I've been saving up Best Buy Reward Points and I got a $20 off reward certificate. And knowing that I'm currently unemployed, I don't know if I would be able to afford it in October. So I figured to use the $20 off for this game so I'll be only paying $20 plus tax. While I couldn't use the certificate while pre-ordering, I could use it when I pick the game up October 3rd. Hopefully Best Buy will have a midnight release.
Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS - Cost $20 - Worth $40 - Difference +$20
Addition #6 - Tag Sale
|
Endless Ocean: Blue World for Nintendo Wii |
Now we come to additions I got today and will most likely be the last for quite a few months. I was on one of my morning walks around town and I say this tag sale. There was not much there but I did spot some Wii games. All where shovelware except this. The one thing that caught my eye was that this game was published by Nintendo. And then I remember watching a video tour of the original game on a website called Wii Folder (Now The Bit Block) a long time ago, like in 2008. Apparently this is a good game. The disc had smudges on it but no scratches, and there was no manual but did include a unused Club Nintendo code, so thanks for the 30 coins! Unfortunately I can't test to see if it works as my Wii can't read games all that well anymore and can't play Gamecube games at all. So I need to get it fixed, but that unemployed thing is a pain in the ass. For $2, sure why not, at least my $2 went to the little kids hosting the tag sale.
Endless Ocean: Blue World for Nintendo Wii - Cost $2 - Worth $20 - Difference +$18
Additions #7 - Retro Games Plus
|
Perfect Dark: Zero for Xbox 360, WWF In Your House for PS1,
and Toy Story for SEGA Genesis |
|
Retro Games Plus store pictures from their Facebook page |
A lot can change in 3 months. If you read my last Video Game Additions post, you'll read about me buying stuff at a place called "The Gaming Source", well that place has now closed down and 2 more retro game stores are opening up both 20 minutes away from me. One, M & J Video Games and Collectibles (
Their Facebook Page) is opening up in the same exact space as The Gaming Source, It is opening up on September 6th with special guests, A 80 year old wrestler, Ox Baker, WWE Superstar John Cena's Father, and Sonar the Hartford Wolfpack mascot. Such a great listing of talent they have there.
The other store opened just today, Retro Games Plus (
Their Facebook Page) on the Berlin Turnpike. As today was the grand opening, this place was packed! I couldn't even spread out my arms and spin in a circle without hitting someone. Yes, I know that was a weird analogy but you get the picture, a lot of people. They have a little of everything, from SEGA Genesis, Xbox 360, NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Gear, N64, Dreamcast, Atari 2600, everything! They even has CIB consoles. Video Game Guides and Books, Nintendo Powers for $3 with posters. This place is amazing. Everything seemed reasonably priced, nothing too expensive. As this place was packed to the brim, I couldn't look at everything, mostly the stuff behind glass. They even had action figures and LEGO bricks for those who like to collect toys.
For the grand opening they had a raffle for a NES 2 (The Top Loader). They guy who was in charge of the raffle would ask everyone who walked by if they wanted to enter. Of course when I walked by, he didn't say a single word to me. So I stood in front of him until he noticed me and gave me a raffle ticket. People have a habit of not talking to me and straight up ignoring me. And then he thought I was stealing his pen when I actually was trying to walk toward the cup of the pens and put the cap back on and put it back it. Oh well!

Weird Yellow Gunk on my PS1 Game from Retro Games Plus |
If I had one complaint it would be that they don't seem to clean the games. I don't mean the disks, but like the cases. On a game I bought, there was this weird yellow junk on it, and I looked at a loose copy of Sonic 3D Blast but it had this sticky residue on it. Maybe it was my luck that I say these dirty games but for the most part, all the other games looked clean.
Now onto the games I bought, they had a deal on Buy 2, get the 3rd Free they had and well I apparently can't read. It had every game from the PS2-Gamecube-Xbox era on in that sale but I failed to realize that anything older, such as my SEGA Genesis and PS1 games were not included. Oh well, I was already close to cashing out and the line was ginormous. I didn't want to bail out of line to save $4.
I got Perfect Dark: Zero for the Xbox 360, a launch title that is supposedly pretty horrible. While I only got past the first tutorial level, one thing is for sure, the graphics sure are rough to look at now. But don't forget that this was released in 2005, 9 years ago. One cool thing is that inside my copy had the receipt of it's previous owner, who bought this game in 2008 for $10 at Gamestop. See, if they waited 6 more years, they could have bought it as Retro Games Plus for half of that and support retro game stores.
Toy Story was a fantastic childhood movie and I remember owning the SEGA Genesis title and not understanding what to do. I eventually traded that into Funcoland when I was little. Good thing I stopped trading games in. Hopefully I could understand what to do now.
With my Game X Change purchase, I only needed two more WWF games to complete my PS1 collection of them. And the two are the most non wrestling, wrestling games. This is a weird game in where it plays like a fighting game and the wrestlers have super moves and have digitized graphics. What a strange game and man, even on Easy it's pretty hard. I got WWF In Your House now so I only need one more to complete the PS1 collection, WWF Wrestlemania: The Arcade Game.
I hope to come back to this store when there a way less people and when I have more money. I hope this places last way longer than The Gaming Source, the two stores feel the same way at least.
Perfect Dark: Zero for Xbox 360 - Cost $5 - Worth $5 - Difference $0
Toy Story for SEGA Genesis - Cost $4 - Worth $5 - Difference +$1
WWF In Your House for Playstation 1 - Cost $5 - Worth $10 - Difference +$5
Overall, I think I did pretty good for the limited money I had, Now I'm broke again, I probably won't make another one of these "Video Game Additions" posts for quite a while. At least until October when I add Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS to my collection. Now Summerslam is tomorrow and I plan on writing a Days After piece on it later this week so look out for that. Then after that's done, I'll work on finishing up the Wrestlemania 30 Days After articles. Theres so much I could say about Brock Lesnar vs. The Undertaker. Also I'm finally finishing the latest "The Collection" video starting Monday, need to record the voice over and well edit the gameplay and VO together. So anyways thanks for reading and talk to you soon!
Grand Total: Cost $84 - Worth $137 - Difference +$53
